As our new normal begins to be established, colleges and universities are releasing their plans for the upcoming school year. Students are also preparing for the fall and securing their off-campus housing.

Whether students just want to be near campus while studying online or need to attend classes in-person, it’s important to practice good hygiene for their safety, as well as others in the community.

Below are some tips for students to clean and keep their rental unit a safe space.

Tips for Cleaning:

  • High-Touch Surfaces – areas like doorknobs, light switches, handrails, and countertops that are touched frequently should be cleaned and then disinfected daily
  • Low-Touch Surfaces – areas such as floors and bookshelves should be cleaned and disinfected weekly
  • Linens, towels, and other pieces of laundry should be washed weekly

Tips for Maintaining Sanitization:

  • Place hand sanitizers by entryways to ensure convenience for using when entering and exiting the unit
  • Get antibacterial hand-wipes for quick cleaning of the washroom and kitchen areas
  • Always ensure you have facial tissue and paper products in the unit
  • Use a certified disinfectant
  • Follow practices outlined or posted by the landlord or property manager, especially when living in a multi-unit building where other tenants reside

As the fall semester approaches and plans for returning to campus are being made, it’s essential to be considerate of others, continue to work together to navigate this new normal and be safe.
