During this pandemic, people around the world have felt the effects differently. Right now, international students who are looking to study abroad are navigating many uncertainties. With the current rules and travel bans in place for Canada and the United States, international students are trying to figure out if and when to secure off-campus housing. There is also still vagueness as to whether students in various programs will be studying on-campus or just virtually.

Here are a few things for students travelling abroad to consider:

In Canada:

  • The Canadian Government has released information to help international students
  • An international student who has a valid student permit or was approved for study before March 18, 2020 is exempt from travel restrictions
  • Upon arrival in Canada, a student must quarantine for 14 days
  • Online courses will not effect a Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

In the United States:

  • Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is intending to be flexible and help adapt as the environment around COVID-19 changes
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been providing updates from SEVP
  • Students required to leave campus are allowed to secure off-campus housing and continue to learn online in a new residence, but are required to update their address within SEVP
  • If online classes are not available and a campus closure is temporary, students can find off-campus accommodations and return to class when the campus opens again
  • SEVP has yet to finalize the protocol for the Fall semester and will continue to provide updates as they become available

Important Tips:

  • Keep up-to-date on plans for the next semester at Upcoming Semester Plans by Partner Schools
  • Be sure to follow-up on residence hall openings before starting to apply for off-campus housing
  • Continue to monitor national guidelines for international students and studying abroad
