Whether you’re a student who prepares for the big move-to-school months in advance or the student who procrastinates and packs hours before leaving, there’s a good chance some important items won’t be on the packing list.

Places4Students.com has compiled a helpful list of often-overlooked items that students should pack before moving to college or university.

• Ear plugs: A good night’s sleep is priceless. Sharing an accommodation with roommates can make it difficult to get uninterrupted sleep. It’s recommended to bring a few pairs of good earplugs, especially for those nights when you have an 8:00 a.m. lecture the following morning.

• Wireless Internet Router: Some landlords might provide an Internet router, if Internet is included within the rental rate. If this is not the case, you will need to provide your own.

• Wifi Cables: When the wireless Internet fails and you’ve got a research project due the next day, you’ll be glad you have wifi cables. Plugging into the Internet connection can be a quick fix, if the wireless isn’t working.

• Power Bar with Surge Protector: Most bedrooms will only have a handful of outlets, resulting in the average student usually having more electronics than available outlets. Invest in a good power bar with a surge protector, so that your electronic devices will be protected from voltage spikes.

• Battery Powered Alarm Clock: If the power goes out overnight, this will eliminate the worry about your alarm clock not going off. Most students rely on their cell phones for an alarm, but technology does fail sometimes too. Students should have a second alarm for those really early mornings, just in case.

• Printer: While your school likely has free printers, it’s a smart move to purchase a printer for at home. It can be an inconvenience for students to go to campus every single time they need to print something. Don’t forget printer ink and paper too.

• 3M Command Strips: When renting an accommodation, a landlord might prohibit tenants from putting nails or tacks in the wall to hang pictures or posters. 3M command strips are a great way to hang things without leaving any damage or residue on the wall.

• Basic Tools and Supplies: Not every single household problem will warrant a call to the landlord. It’s wise to keep a hammer, some screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench and other tools handy in case you need to fix something small. (But if it’s a serious or major issue, call the landlord).

• Extra Blankets: At one point or another, a friend is probably going to crash at your place. Be a good friend and have an extra set of blankets and pillows for them!

• Can Opener: Ever try opening a can of Spaghetti-O’s or Chef Boyardee without a can opener? It isn’t fun and usually doesn’t work out well.

• Umbrella: Everyone forgets this! There’s nothing more uncomfortable than sitting in a lecture hall soaked from head-to-toe after your walk to class.

• First Aid Kit: Hopefully you’ll never have to use it, but in the event there's an accident or injury, it’s wise to have a first aid kit on hand.

• Batteries: There’s nothing worse than having to stand-up and change the TV channel manually because you forgot to buy batteries.

• Clothes Drying Rack: Mom won’t be there to do your laundry and some items cannot be placed into a dryer.
