In an era when a student renters insurance policy costs less than a cappuccino each month, why is it that nearly two-thirds of all renters are still uninsured?
Maybe it has to do with bad branding. “Renters Insurance” isn’t sexy. And the name isn’t totally self-explanatory – it doesn’t exactly sound like protection for your stuff or damages you may cause others. Even if people do know that renters insurance covers their stuff, some don’t think it’s worth the monthly payment.
Spoiler alert – it is! And when you’re hanging around campus or living up that student life, it’s essential.
Here are some situations where renters insurance would come in handy around campus:
-
Your laptop/phone/headphones are stolen.
Unfortunately, this type of stuff happens all the time. Your renters insurance policy covers your personal stuff, and you can also add extra coverage for valuable items such as fine art, expensive jewelry, watches, electronics, and more. So if you’re a victim of theft, your policy has your back!
-
A small fire breaks out in your shared kitchen.
Even small kitchen fires can cause some serious damage to your stuff. Turn to your policy (it’s under your “Personal Property” coverage) for help with your damaged items.
-
Your place becomes uninhabitable.
Eek! An electrical outlet sparks a fire that forces you out of your apartment. Your upstairs neighbors leave a faucet running all day and floods your apartment. You’ll need to evacuate for a night or two, and may need to get a hotel. Your policy may cover temporary housing and some other basic expenses until your pad is habitable again. This is something that most renters insurance policies will cover (called “Loss of Use”).

Legal stuff and medical costs for others.
House parties can create all sorts of insurance-y messes. If you’re sued after your friend slipped on spilled beer and broke his leg, your policy may cover the costs to get you out of this jam. If one of your friends gets hurt in your apartment, goes to the hospital, and then decides to sue you (what a friend, right?) your liability coverage will kick in for both medical and legal fees.

When Spot becomes too friendly.
If your dog bites someone, your policy has you covered. The cool thing about this one is that it applies both when you are at home or at the park. There are two exceptions though – you’re not covered if your dog has a history of biting and/or if your dog is categorized as high-risk or “vicious.”
There are so many benefits of renters insurance coverage for you and your stuff, it’s hard to ignore.
Still not convinced? The best part of renters insurance is that you usually can stop and start as you wish. With coverage starting from monthly prices as low as your morning cup of joe, it would be the smart thing to invest that same dollar amount into something much greater than a single caffeine rush – daily peace of mind with insurance by Lemonade!
