The endeavor of finding the perfect roommate is a difficult one.  It involves very careful screening and selection.

Students will often spend 8 months or more living with a roommate, so it’s important they find someone who is compatible to live with.  Often students are assigned roommates with little or no choice in the selection process when living on-campus.  However, students residing off-campus generally have more freedom to select a compatible roommate.

The following is a list of 10 questions to ask when picking a roommate(s):

  1. What are you looking for in an ideal roommate?
  2. How would you describe your lifestyle?
  3. What is your preferred living accommodation? (Do you prefer a house, apartment, condo?)
  4. Do you have pets?
  5. What is your schedule like? (Are you a night-owl or an early riser?)
  6. Do you drink or smoke?
  7. What would you be bringing with you, if we moved in together?
  8. What are your biggest pet peeves?
  9. Would you have overnight guests?
  10. What are your hobbies and interests?

*Bonus question:
Have you ever lived with a roommate before?  If yes, why aren’t you living together any longer?

By asking these questions, it can help to determine a roommate’s compatibility and avoid potential conflicts or problems in the long run.  Finding the perfect match for a roommate is difficult; but by asking the right questions, the probability of finding a good match is greatly increased!
